More firms cut prices for our super troopers

Generous offers from businesses across the North East are continuing to flood in for the Echo's Honour Our Brave campaign.

More than 40 shops, restaurants and visitor attractions have now signed up to our drive to thank the hundreds of brave men and women across the region who are serving in warzones such as Iraq and Afghanistan.

Among the latest businesses to join our campaign is J Dodds Fencing and Decking, in Ryhope. The firm is offering a 10 per cent discount to military personnel.

Owner Jonathan Dodds, who set up the company nearly 10 years ago, said: "We have a wide range of customers ranging from large housing associations and building companies, but our main customer base is the public in the North East and we are well known and trusted."

Sharon Grey's Childcare, in Grangetown, Sunderland, is also offering a 10 per cent saving on its services.

"I'm sure there are lots of servicemen's wives who would like to go to work, but can not afford the cost of childcare," said Sharon, who is Ofsted registered. "I'm hoping I can help." Full details on 552 7962 and 0796 195 1742.

Elsewhere, the Little Brown Carr face painting company, in Washington, is offering service personnel a 25 per cent discount.

Paula Brown, who runs the business with Shirley Carr, said: "We are available for parties and events for any age or description. We would like to offer a 25 per cent discount on our hourly rate to service personnel and their families."

And Dolly Foster Miniatures, which specialises in one-twelfth scale houses and accessories, is also backing our drive.

The business, which is based on Tunstall Road, Sunderland, is offering a 10 per cent discount across all full-price items in the store.

Meanwhile, a charity walk organised by staff at Tavistock Leisure, which was among the first businesses to sign up to the Honour our Brave' campaign, has raised 5,000 to help support British troops serving overseas.

Lyndsey Urwin, a restaurant manager with the company, organised the eight-mile walk between the Best Western Roker Hotel, in Sunderland, and the Tavistock Italia, in South Shields.

Lyndsey, whose husband is serving in Afghanistan with the Parachute Regiment, said: "The money we have raised will go towards sending gift packages to those soldiers who would normally receive nothing.

"It's a great morale booster and reminds the soldiers of the support they have from home. I would like to thank everyone who took part in the walk and Tavistock Leisure for the support in organising the event in aid of the Support Our Soldiers charity."
