Miracle twins' big day

Today is the day parents Michael and Danielle Brown thought they would never see.

It is a milestone for premature twins Molly and Jake, three, who are off to nursery after winning their battle for survival.

Born 10 weeks early, the tots faced a tough entry into the world, but are now fighting fit and excited about starting nursery at Fulwell Infant School.

Mum Danielle, 32, said: "They are a little small for their age and still go to see a speech therapist, but they are coming along brilliantly."

"Doctors have said they should have caught up with other children their age by the time they are five, so we don't have any concerns about their development."

The twins proved to be little miracles for their proud parents, who both work for Sunderland Social Services, as they were born on the couple's second IVF attempt after four years of trying for a family.

Danielle said: "We had problems finding Molly a uniform because she is so tiny, but what she lacks in height she makes up for in mouth.

"Their speech is really coming along and they are at the stage where they copy everything you say."

Jake and Molly were born on January 28, 2006, by Caesarean section, delivered by a team of 11 medics.

Michael and Danielle, of Druridge Avenue, Seaburn, were terrified the twins would not survive as Jake's lung collapsed and Molly was born so tiny.

Molly weighed just 1lb 11oz and Jake was 3lb 5oz, but three years on the pair are thriving.

Earlier this year, Michael teamed up with pals to take on the 150-mile Coast to Coast bike ride to raise 2,000 for Sunderland Royal Hospital's neo-natal unit, where the twins spent their first nine weeks of life.
