Lyke Wake walkers add £2,500 to fund

A trek across the North York Moors has raised more than £2,500 towards a memorial to Wearside's fallen servicemen and women.

Janice Murray, whose son Michael Tench was killed in Iraq in January 2007, joined 22 workers from Steadfast Security Systems in Peterlee to complete the 42-mile walk Lyke Wake Walk.

The walk was in aid of the Brothers In Arms appeal, which aims to raise 50,000 for a monument to service personnel from across Sunderland and Durham who have been killed in combat and training since 1946.

Janice, 47, of Carley Hill, said: "It was a fantastic challenge to achieve.

"The hills were like huge mountains and we walked through all sorts of terrain.

"We covered about six and a half miles every hour and 40 minutes and we had fantastic team-building and support.

"I always used to say to Michael: 'If you don't try, you're not going to get anywhere' and what kept me going was picturing him saying: 'Go on, mum, keep going'."

The team started their trek in Osmotherley on Friday at 5.45am and did not stop walking until 4pm on Saturday.

The walk to Ravenscar tops 42 miles, but Janice believes they walked much further because they got lost on the moors for four hours.

Janice is still waiting for all her sponsorship money to come in, but says she has collected at least 500.

Ian Harboard, director of Steadfast Security Systems, estimates that 2,000 has been raised through sponsorship for his 22 staff.

He said: "Money is still coming in and it has been a great effort from everyone concerned.

"We want to thank everybody – the workers who took part and the people who supported us – for their excellent support."

Brothers In Arms fund-raising events are planned for October 10 and October 23. Further details will be printed in the Echo.

To support the campaign, send a cheque made payable to Brothers in Arms to Janice at 3 Erin Square, Carley Hill, Sunderland, SR5 2QA.
