Lottery grant boost for schools
Pupils at two Sunderland schools are being kept active thanks to a lottery grant.
East Herrington Primary and St Aidan's RC School have received more than 17,000 from a Lottery-funded grant to help improve sports facilities in their out-of- school clubs.
The funding from the Awards of All in England will greatly improve the sporting facilities for the two clubs.
Members of the Activities for You Club at St Aidan's Comprehensive School will benefit from 9,940, which will be used for a new fitness room and extra activities, including break-dancing, gymnastics, football training and professional coaches.
The 7,219 grant for East Herrington Primary School will let youngsters continue enjoying their gym club and PE lessons, but with the addition of brand new gymnastics equipment.
Coun Pat Smith, Cabinet Member for Children's Services within Sunderland City Council, said: "The additional funding from the Awards for All grant to help expand sporting facilities is wonderful news for both schools.
"The new equipment will definitely work as an excellent incentive for youngsters to develop a regular exercise routine outside of their regular PE lessons.
"It is vital that Sunderland schools not only offer healthy school meals but also provide appropriate opportunities for pupils to participate in sporting activities, as this will help to promote an all round healthy lifestyle."
With support from Sunderland Children's Services, every school across Wearside now offers children and their families access to a wide range of services, including adult and family learning, childcare, study support and out of school activities.
