LOONY WOMAN ENTERS RACE FOR RI

SUNDERLANDS council elections

The Official Monster Raving Loony Party is putting forward candidate Rosalyn Warner to contest the Hendon seat in Mays elections.

The seat that saw former council leader Bryn Sidaway ousted last year by only two votes looks set to be the most hotly contested in the whole of Sunderland, with four candidates vying for it.

As well as Labour candidate Gillian Galbraith and Conservative candidate Janice Morrisey, David Guynan has been put forward for the extreme right-wing British National Party.

The controversial party, which has been targeting homes throughout Sunderland with leaflets, is also contesting Thorney Close ward.

Joseph Dobbie is standing there against Mrs Galbraiths husband Coun Ian Galbraith, Conservative Neville Chamberlain, and Georgina Kennedy, of the Liberal Democrats.

This years elections look to be one of the most hotly contested in Sunderland for a long time, with the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives putting forward more candidates than in the past to challenge Labour.

Only three seats are uncontested for Labour this year: Coun Jack Bedlington, in Washington North; Coun Bob Symonds, at Town End Farm; and Coun Michael Clare, at Castletown.

After resigning his seat in Thornholme, Liberal Democrat group leader Coun John Lennox has decided to stand in the St Peters seat, where the Tories beat Labour last year.

He will be up against sitting Labour councillor Bob Christie and James Wynn for the Tories.

And former Conservative group leader Ron Smith is standing again as an Independent Conservative in Pallion.

The elections, the first to take place since the change over to Sunderland Councils "cabinet" system, will take place on Thursday, May 4, although there will be opportunities to vote beforehand.

Sunderland is trying out two new voting systems – people can either vote for a week before the election, and a mobile voting booth will be visiting residential areas in the south of the city.
