Let your imagination run wild in fantasy land hotel

A HOTEL like no other has opened in a refurbished town house in Durham City.

Entrepreneur John Marshall, who ran the now defunct Durham Pine chain of furniture stores, spent 2million turning the Grade II listed building, in Old Elvet, into a fantasy land for guests.

An idea of what to expect is given by the Jules Verne-themed reception and beach cafe-themed restaurant.

One of the 10 rooms has a garden shed inside it and a carpet of artificial grass.

Another room has a cinema with its own popcorn cart and the back seat of a Rolls-Royce.

Durham City might be 15 miles from the coast, but a taste of the sea is provided by the cruise room, with its porthole windows and ship's bow-shaped curved walls.

Other themed rooms include a Victorian boudoir, a Gothic Cruella room, and an Edwardian railway room, described as a mixture between The Railway Children, the film Brief Encounter, and Harry Potter's Hogwarts Express.

Mr Marshall, 52, opened the hotel with business and life partner Sandra MacDonald.

"Enormous attention has been paid to detail to really make the themes come alive," he said.

"The hotel takes the wow factor to a new level and we think there is nothing quite like it in the North East, if not the country.

"Some of the rooms are theatrical, some quirky, others romantic, all are extravagant, allowing guests to go wherever their imagination takes them.

"We chose the name Fallen Angel to reflect the fact there is a little bit of mischief in all of us."

The Fallen Angel is open to non-residents for drinks and meals. Rooms range from 150 to 300 a night.

Contact the hotel via its website: www.fallenangelhotel.com, or tel. 370 9991.
