John F Kennedy School pupils get fruity on a big scale

A tasty treat was in store as pupils got a bit fruity.

All the children at John F Kennedy Primary School in Washington took part in a mammoth fruit salad-making event.

As well as creating enough fruit salad for the whole school, the aim of the competition was to encourage as many local people to join in.

Judith Monaghan, a teacher at the Station Road school, said they tried to encourage local businesses, groups and individuals to create a fruit salad on the same day.

She said: "We asked everyone who made a fruit salad on the same day as us to sign our forms to say they have done it. We are hoping to have about 1,500 signatures.

"We got the whole school involved with it and all the classes had different tasks, such as the little ones peeling satsumas and the older ones cutting apples."

The competition, organised by the national Let's Get Cooking scheme for schools, will see the competing group with the most signatures claim the top prize of 3,000.
