Jobs agency boss backs Wearside's World Cup bid
One NorthEast is backing Sunderland's bid to bring the World Cup to Wearside.
The city last week launched its bid to host group stage games at the Stadium of Light if England's application to host the 2018 tournament is successful.
Newcastle and Gateshead are also seeking to be selected as a host city and launched a joint bid yesterday.
Regional development agency One NorthEast believes bringing the World Cup to the region could have massive implications for an area which already benefits by 4billion a year from tourism.
"We welcome the bids of Sunderland and Newcastle to become host cities for the World Cup in 2018, said agency chairwoman Margaret Fay.
"The Stadium of Light and St James's Park are both world class venues with experience of hosting major events. The passionate support of North East people will add real strength to the bids.
"Both bids will be proposing facilities around the whole region, which would bring enormous economic benefit to the North East.
"I would urge everyone in the region to back England's bid and get behind Sunderland and Newcastle bids by logging on to www.england2018bid.com to register their support."
The Sunderland 2018 bid was launched by Black Cats chairman Niall Quinn and Sunderland City Council leader Coun Paul Watson. The Sunderland team is working with partners in Tyneside, County Durham, Tees Valley and Northumberland to ensure the bid is a regional proposal.
"In the Stadium of Light and the Academy of Light in particular, we have some of the best sporting stadia and training facilities in England, if not the world and I know that we've got what it takes to be a host city," said Niall Quinn.
"But that's just part of the story – we also have fantastic facilities across County Durham, Northumberland, South Tyneside, Tees Valley and Tyneside and we want to create a bid that brings them altogether to showcase this region to a world-wide audience.
"The warmth and enthusiasm of the people are such assets for us and I ask everyone, young and old, to put their heart and soul into supporting our bid.
"I know football fans from around the world will fall in love with this city and the whole of our region."
