'It's a disgrace'
DOG mess is ruining a Sunderland park where visitors claim bins have gone unemptied for two months.
Fed-up residents in Silksworth contacted the Echo because of mounting concerns over the potential health hazard posed by the bins.
One 38-year-old, who regularly walks her dog around the Silksworth Sports Complex, has branded the situation "disgusting".
"There are only four designated dog waste bins," she explained.
"One in particular has not been emptied for two months, people are having to hang carrier bags of waste over the side of the bins. It's disgusting.
"This isn't a one-off. It happens all the time and it's a public health hazard."
Although there are a number of regular bins on the popular site, many bear signs asking dog walkers not to use them for the disposal of dog waste.
The worried dog walker added: "It is a really popular area and people want to pick up their dog's waste, but there isn't enough bins.
"The council are willing to fine you for not picking up after your dog, yet they won't empty the bins."
Coun Phil Tye, who represents Silksworth ward, said: "There is no excuse to leave a bin for that long. It's a disgrace.
"Obviously there may be a resource issue with having enough people to empty them, but we should have as many dog waste bins as possible."
Fellow Silksworth councillor Peter Gibson said: "This issue was also raised a couple of years ago. Something definitely needs to be done."
Julie Gray, Head of Community Services at Sunderland City Council, said: "We are aware of people's concerns in this area through our regular public consultation, and nine extra bins will be supplied over the coming months.
"Once installed, these bins and all the others our officers are responsible for, will continue to be emptied on a regular basis."
