Inspectors give school thumbs-up
A village school has been praised by Government inspectors on its 50th anniversary.
Whitburn Village Primary School's "welcoming and caring atmosphere" was one of many attributes mentioned in a recent Ofsted report.
The school, in Cleadon Lane, was classed as satisfactory overall, and inspectors noticed a significant improvement since the last inspection four years ago.
Two days after the report the school received a letter from the Department for Children, Schools and Families, saying it is in the top 100 schools in the country for sustained improvement.
Lead inspector Linda Buller said: "This is a satisfactory and improving school where all pupils are made welcome. Pupils are effectively cared for.
"They feel safe and have a well-developed understanding of potential dangers and how to minimise the risk to themselves and others.
"Effective support and guidance lead to good behaviour and a good understanding of how to follow a healthy lifestyle."
The school was praised for its cleanliness, and pupils' behaviour is described as exemplary.
Pupils showed a good understanding of English and maths, but this is not reflected in other subjects, especially science, the report said.
It recommended that the school improves standards of teaching in the weaker subjects.
The report said the school is heading in the right direction and praised the vision of new headteacher Judith Knill, who joined last September.
"The new headteacher has quickly developed a clear vision of where the school needs to go and the school improvement plan accurately reflects key priorities," Ms Buller said.
The school welcomed the report, saying it had identified areas for improvement before the inspection.
