Hundreds of temporary jobs created to skill-up youngsters
Hundreds of temporary jobs will be created in Sunderland and County Durham to help struggling youngsters develop their work skills.
They are being established as part of the 22million Future Jobs Fund programme, and will see 3,500 positions provided for unemployed North East 18 to 24-year-olds during the next 18 months.
About 1,600 will be available by March, including 313 in Sunderland, 462 in County Durham and 82 in South Tyneside.
They will cover a range of employment sectors, including health and social care, business and administration, ICT, contact centre skills, youth work and catering and hospitality.
The jobs must last at least six months and be for at least 25 hours per week, and pay at least the national minimum wage.
Some youngsters have already been found positions and are benefiting from the scheme.
One of the first was Mark Gray, from Carley Hill, Sunderland, who was unemployed for nine months after being made redundant.
Now he has been found employment with Hendon-based training and development company, Etec as an office administrator and receptionist.
"I am very grateful to Etec and the Future Jobs Fund for the opportunity it has given me to get back into the workplace," said Mark, 19.
"This placement has given me the chance to learn new skills which will help me secure a more permanent position in the future."
Mark is also studying for an NVQ in customer services through Etec.
A series of employment roadshows will take place over the coming weeks – including at the Stadium of Light's Durham Suite from 11am to 3pm on tomorrow – giving details of jobs and support available for prospective employees.
The programme is being run by the Tyne and Wear City Region, which brings together seven councils including Sunderland, Durham and South Tyneside, to work with other agencies and the private sector.
