Hit-and-run on Sunderland fan

A Black Cats fan is lucky to be alive after being mown down by a hit-and-run driver in a suspected stolen car.

The driver of the Vauxhall Vectra veered off the road, mounted the pavement and hit Mick Hudson, 53, of Haverley Drive, Seaham, knocking him unconscious.

It then sped off and, according to witnesses, returned and deliberately ran into Mick's 32-year-old son Christopher, who had been walking along the pavement with him.

The incident happened just hours after the pair had watched Sunderland AFC take on Derby FC.

But, it was not until days later, when he returned home and his injuries grew worse, that doctors at Sunderland Royal Hospital told Mick he would need a four-inch metal plate inserted in his arm.

Christopher sustained severe bruising, grazes and cuts, including a three-inch gash to his scalp.

Mick said: "On reflection of what happened, we both feel we are very, very lucky to be alive."

The accident happened near Derby after Mick, a maintenance engineer with Ellesmere Laundry in Grangetown, and his son had been for a night out after watching Sunderland's away game.

Derby Police said investigations are continuing into the incident, including a possible link between a stolen Vauxhall Vectra later found burned out and the car involved in the hit-and-run.

Mick said: "I'd been to the match with my two brothers, Andrew and Robert, and two friends. We were staying at Andrew's at Kilburn, outside Derby."

Mick said they had been for a drink after the 0-0 draw and then had a meal at a golf club, before going for a couple of drinks to Belper, a small town on the outskirts of Derby.

"We finished the evening off at Andrew's local pub, the Bull's Head in Kilburn. We left at about 2.15am and were walking back to Andrew's house along Belper Road.

"We were on the pavement when a car came round the bend towards us, careered over the road onto the pavement and struck me.

"I went head over heels and ended up lying poleaxed on the pavement. I must have been unconscious for five or six minutes.

"By the time I came round my son was also lying on the road. I was informed by two witnesses that the car had driven away and come back and knocked Christopher down.

"The car then sped off along the lane. Christopher was knocked over but he wasn't unconscious and saw the car speed off."

Mick said paramedics gave them treatment at the roadside but their injuries were not thought to be serious so they made their way back to Andrew's home.

"However, over the weekend my injuries seemed to become worse so I attended a medical centre where I found out it was more than severe bruising but a fracture of the left arm which needed emergency surgery.

"I had a four-inch plate and pins inserted at Sunderland Royal Hospital to join the fracture back together."
