High-speed rail network will not reach North East
A new 250mph national rail network will not include the North East – but passengers will still get shorter journey times.
Transport Secretary Lord Adonis is backing a new 335-mile London to Scotland network.
The 30billion proposal is a Y-shaped network of lines north of Birmingham, running either side of the Pennines to Manchester, the East Midlands, Sheffield and Leeds, Liverpool, Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Despite being part of the High-Speed Rail (HSR) service, trains travelling to the North East from Leeds would be moved on to the lower East Coast Main Line track through Durham City and Newcastle.
However, it would still slice 32 minutes off the three hours and nine minutes journey time to London.
Travelling time between Newcastle and Birmingham would be cut by 40 minutes.
