Help raise funds for soldiers

The wife of a soldier serving in Afghanistan is holding a fund-rasing event in honour of her husband and his comrades.

Lyndsey Urwin's sends her partner Ronnie, 27, of the Parachute Regiment, care packages filled with sweets, cheese and other treats.

The 24-year-old, who manages the Tavistock restaurant and bar in South Shields, said: "When I was talking to Ronnie he told me that some of the soldiers don't get anything from home at all.

"I decided to try and raise some funds to help then get sent boxes of goodies to keep their spirits up."

Lyndsey has organised a sponsored walk and a family fun day to raise funds for Support Our Soldiers (SOS) on Sunday, June 8 – the end of SOS week.

The event walk, supported by Lyndsey's employers, goes from the Tavistock Roker Hotel in Sunderland to the restaurant Lyndsey works at in South Shields.

At the finishing line there will be a BBQ, a bouncy castle and a commemorative balloon release for SOS week.

All the money raised will be used to send packages to soldiers serving abroad in places like Iraq and Afghanistan.
