Health group wins gold award
A health campaigning group has won a prestigious award for its work to reduce smoking.
Fresh Smoke Free North East, the country's first regional tobacco office, scooped gold at the Chief Medical Officer's Public Health Awards.
The awards are designed to recognise teams, people and projects who have made a massive impact on helping to improve public health.
Ailsa Rutter, director of Fresh, said: "I am proud of the Fresh team and the hard work of the NHS, local authorities, academics, voluntary and private sector, as well as the public, in tackling our biggest killer.
"Smoking affects everyone, whether it's a family or an employer, and more and more people are seeing the benefits of quitting or not starting in the first place."
Fresh was set up five years ago and its work has included campaigning for the smoke free law; supporting the NHS Stop Smoking Services to help smokers to quit; helping reduce the numbers of people who smoke in the region and raising awareness about the harm caused by secondhand smoke to children.
It also developed plans to tackle tobacco smuggling and has contributed to the region's health and wellbeing strategy Better Health Fairer Health.
Coun Nick Forbes, chairman of the Tobacco Regional Advisory Group, said the award was an "incredible achievement and reflects the enormous contribution Fresh has made".
