Good fortune
SIR Peter Vardy increased his wealth by £30million in the last 12 months, according to a new list of Britain's richest people.
The chief executive of the Reg Vardy motor group, based in Sunderland, has seen his fortune rise to 110million this year from 80million in 2003.
The Sunday Times Rich List 2004, published tomorrow, puts Sir Peter seventh in the top 10 richest people in the North East, two places up from last year.
He is also ranked as the 356th wealthiest person in Britain, up 50 places from his position last year of 406th.
Sir Richard Storey, former owner of the Sunderland Echo, drops from fourth to eighth in the North East top 10.
His fortune of 100million, including family wealth, fell from 110million in 2003.
The former chairman of Portsmouth and Sunderland newspapers, which owned the Echo and other regional papers before being bought by Johnston Press, is the 384th richest person in the country, a fall of 94 places from last year.
Mark Fenwick, owner of the Fenwick's department store in Newcastle, has displaced the Duke of Northumberland as the North East's wealthiest person.
His fortune, including family wealth, is calculated at 320million, making him the 133rd richest person in Britain.
The Duke of Northumberland, who makes his money from land and art, is worth 300million, ranking him second in the region and 143rd nationally.
Tyneside-born musician Sting is the third richest North East person with 175million, while in ninth place are Hollywood film directors Sir Ridley and Tony Scott, from South Shields.
The brothers, who own a substantial stake in Pinewood Studios, have a combined worth of 95million.
Other entrants in the North East top 10 are Graham Wylie, co-founder of the Sage software management group (equal third, 175million); nursing homes and fitness clubs boss Duncan Bannatyne (fifth, 115million); electrical contractors Alastair and Michael Powell (sixth, 112million); and Middlesbrough Football Club chairman Steve Gibson (10th, 85million).
The wealth of the region's top 10 richest people totals 1,587million.
Ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney, husband of Washington-born Heather Mills, is worth 760million, according to the list.
The rich list is based on identifiable wealth such as land, property, assets such as art or racehorses and shares in publicly quoted companies, but does not include bank accounts.
