Fulwell pupils get crash course on net safety
Whizz-kids have been getting a crash course in Internet safety as part of a new campaign.
Cyber-bullying, inappropriate images and heightened protection online are all issues tackled in the Government campaign, Zip It, Block It, Flag It.
As part of the scheme, parents are being urged to teach their children to block people who bully or frighten them online and to regularly check if they have seen anything that upsets them.
The move is a result of the Byron Report, which found 53 per cent of adults want better information about the Internet.
During the past week, Redby Primary School, in Fulwell, Sunderland, has been tackling Internet safety.
It highlighted the dangers of using the Internet and other technologies through a series of workshops.
Parents were invited into the school to have a look at what their children were about to learn, including posting information on social networking sites, using chatrooms and beefing up security on the Internet.
Headteacher Val Shiel said: "The idea is getting across the message to children and their parents about things they do online that they wouldn't dream of doing in the real world.
"In the real world you wouldn't do something like stick a poster of yourself on a billboard for all to see, but people do this in cyberspace.
"It's about getting people thinking about what they're doing online and what information they are giving people access to."
The Government's Children's Secretary Ed Balls said: "The Internet is a fantastic tool for young people and can open their eyes to tremendous opportunities.
"But it's important that parents and children understand the risks involved with using the Internet, as with any area of life."
Jim Gamble, chief executive officer of Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (Ceop), added: "Internet safety advice needs to be at your fingertips and not hidden away."
