Four held after drug raid
Dawn raids weeded out a stash of cannabis and amphetamine and led to four arrests.
A new crime crackdown started in style yesterday with a drugs seizure at a Thorney Close house.
Officers stormed the Tilbury Close property after a tip-off from the community. It is believed that police recovered cannabis and amphetamine.
Four men, aged 27, 26, 23 and 19, were arrested on suspicion of possession of a class B drug. They have all been bailed pending further inquiries.
The intelligence-led raids formed part of a new crime blitz called Not in My Neighbourhood Week.
It sees police join forces with partner agencies, including Sunderland City Council and housing firm gentoo, to tackle crime and disorder and to reassure and inform the public on what is being done to tackle crime on their doorstep.
Acting Neighbourhood Inspector Ken Robinson, who is leading the community-wide clampdown, was delighted with the start of the week-long operation.
He said: "These raids are just the start of a week of action we have planned, aimed at not just tackling crime and disorder but informing the public we are tackling crime and disorder.
"We will continue to take robust action to make our communities safer places for people to be."
The raid comes days after a 70-strong team of detectives tackled a suspected drug-dealing ring in Sunderland.
Police seized 3,000-worth of class A drugs, fake designer clothes and suspected stolen motor vehicle parts. They made five arrests.
Each day this week as part of Not in My Neighbourhood Week, police will be at community centres across the city answering people's concerns.
Anyone with information about crime is asked to phone police on 03456 043 043 or independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
