Fears for man spark coast search
Police and Coastguard were scrambled amid fears for a man on the coast near Souter Lighthouse in Whitburn.
The search and rescue helicopter was called out from RAF Boulmer, along with an RNLI inshore lifeboat, after police received a report from a member of the public shortly after 2pm.
The teams conducted a major search of the two-mile stretch of coastline between Souter Point and Frenchman's Bay.
Ian Rowan, helmsman at Sunderland RNLI, said "Initially we were asked to carry out a coastal search along the base of the cliffs."
After one and a half hours the sea search was ended by officers based at Humber Coastguard.
Ian added: "After carrying out a detailed search of the search area, it was decided to scale down both the water and land-based coastal search, leaving the police to continue with the search further inland."
The 21-year-old man was later found.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "The man was found at home in Whitburn at 5.23pm yesterday by relatives, who informed police."
