Family victims of firework attack

Police are appealing for witnesses following a fire at a house in Sunderland.

At around 10.55pm on Friday April 3 police received a report of a house on fire in Belford Road, Sunderland.

Police, Ambulance and Fire crews attended and a man in his 40's along with his wife and their son were evacuated from the property. The man suffered minor injuries as a result of smoke inhalation.

The fire was caused when an unknown person has smashed a front window to the property and thrown two lit fireworks through and into the building. The fireworks caused smoke damage and minor fire damage to the living room but were extinguished by the occupants.

Detective Sgt Phillip Hamlani, Gillbridge CID, said: " This appears to be an isolated incident and investigations are ongoing to try and trace who's done this. I'd urge anyone who was in the area at the time or has seen anything suspicious to get in touch".
