Family cheat death in A1 smash

A family-of-four cheated death today when their car hit a crash barrier and over turned.

The accident happened on the A1 motor way on the south-bound carriage way at the A195 slip road near Washington Services at 8.44am.

The mother, who was driving the car suffered minor injuries and was taken to Gateshead's Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

The father and two children came away uninjured and no other vehicles were involved in the collision.

PC Rob Roney, of Northumbria Police, said: "Thankfully all four people inside the care were wearing seatbelts.

"We cannot stress enough how important it is to wear a seatbelt and this is an example of how it can potentially save lives."
