Dog-walker raped boy,16
A dog-walker raped a teenage boy during a brutal early-morning attack.
The 16-year-old was walking through Monkwearmouth when a man asked him for a light.
The attacker, who was walking a German shepherd dog, then launched his attack, sexually assaulting the youngster before raping him.
The terrified victim managed to struggle free and fled the scene.
The rapist was white, about 5ft 11in tall and of slim build. He had short, dark hair in no particular style, was unshaven and spoke with a local accent. It is believed he was wearing a navy blue Barbour jacket.
Detectives have carried out a search of the area and inquiries are taking place in the nearby community.
Patrols in the area have also been stepped up since the incident, which took place on Tuesday at about 4am in the Bond Close and Southwick Road area.
Detective Inspector Tim Miley, of Northumbria Police's Rape Investigation Team, said: "We would like to reassure the public that we are doing all we can to trace this offender and extensive inquiries are under way.
"We would appeal for the public's help and anyone with information or anyone who recognises the man from his description come forward as they might have vital information to assist with our inquiries.
"People may have seen this man walking his dog in this area previously, so we would ask them to contact us."
Acting Inspector Gary Dixon, of Sunderland Area Command, added: "Residents can be reassured that there is a team of detectives investigating this offence to apprehend the offender.
"Sunderland is a safe place to live, work and visit. If anyone has any concerns I would ask them to speak to their local Neighbourhood Policing Team."
Anyone with information or any witnesses can contact the Rape Investigation Team by phoning 03456 043 043 or independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
