Delight as Sunderland clinches Nissan Leaf deal
The Leaf is coming to Sunderland.
Nissan announced today that its Wearside plant has won the race to build the new generation of electric-powered family cars in Europe.
The move will safeguard about 2,250 jobs at the Washington factory and across the UK supply chain.
Today's announcement is the culmination of massive efforts to put the region at the centre of the low-carbon industry.
Business Secretary Lord Mandelson described the decision as "a massive vote of confidence" in the Sunderland workforce.
