Crash shut A! for three hours

Motorists faced long delays after a smash on the A1 closed the road for three hours.

The northbound carriageway was closed after the two-car crash near the Angel of the North in Gateshead at shortly before noon yesterday, causing tailbacks on other roads.

The A1 was shut for three hours while paramedics treated those injured in the collision between a Citroen Xsara Picasso and an Afla Romeo – which turned upside down.

Emergency services were called and the air ambulance was flown in to help with treatment.

The driver of the Alfa Romeo, a 49-year-old man, was taken to Newcastle General Hospital with serious head injuries which were described as "serious but not life-threatening." Two other people were treated for minor injuries.

The road was reopened shortly before 3pm.

Diversions were put in place to direct traffic off the A1 and onto the A167.

The closure meant long delays on other roads as motorists tried alternative routes into Tyneside.
