Cop's HIV fear after woman bit him
A police officer faces an anxious wait to discover whether he has HIV after being bitten by a woman he was trying to arrest.
Known drug user Dianne Jones, 34, from Shakespeare Avenue, Hebburn, was jailed for 12 weeks after assaulting two police officers in the same night, a court heard.
Caroline McGurk, prosecuting, told how police were called and Pc Neil Mitchell, based at Southwick police station, moved towards her to arrest her for a public order offence, but when he tried to cuff her she sank her teeth into his wrist.
In a statement read out to South Tyneside magistrates he described an "intense" pain, which forced him to punch the back of her head to release her grip on him.
He faces a lengthy wait to find out whether he has contracted HIV from the bite.
