Clergymen slam grisly video game
Parents on Wearside are being urged to stick to computer game age limits after a bishop slammed a new release for glamorising violence and promoting the occult.
The Bishop of Jarrow, the Right Reverend Mark Bryant, joined two other clergy members to condemn grisly Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles, which is due for release tomorrow on the Nintendo Wii.
Bishop Mark, Archdeacon Brian Smith, of the Isle of Man, and Bishop John Goddard, of Burnley, have all accused the game of promoting violence.
Bishop Mark said: "Games like Resident Evil show that there is appeal in the dark side. However, if people spend a lot of time in the company of games that are about the occult, then those influences are bound to rub off."
Rev Goddard said: "If we dabble in this area we open ourselves to influences and put ourselves at risk. I would regard any encouragement for children to be drawn into this behaviour with extreme horror."
Sarah Gibson, manager of the Grainger Games store in Waterloo Place, Sunderland, said it was important for parents to use the video game certification system.
Leo Tan, spokesman for game publisher Capcom, said: "This is scaremongering and typical religious hysteria. You cannot blame society's ills on video games.
"Video games are entertainment and like horror movies or other scary films they are covered by a ratings system. Resident Evil for example is a 15 certificate and not suitable for anyone under that age.
"Parents have to be trusted to adhere to these age restrictions and use common sense."
Resident Evil is a video game series and media franchise consisting of comic books, novelizations, films, and a variety of collectibles. The series has sold about 40million games to date.
Capcom describes the game as "leading players into a horrific world where the lines between good and evil are blurred and the fight begins with your dark side."
