City prepares for spending cuts
City leaders have issued a rallying call to the people of Sunderland after a new survey said the city was one of the most vulnerable to economic shock in the entire country.
Council leader Paul Watson said research saying Sunderland's economic resilience ranked 308 of all 324 UK councils to upcoming Government cuts had underestimated the strength of the area.
He said the council had moved early to prepare for the cuts – which will be announced in October – and pointed to the recent creation of 200 jobs at 2Touch in the city as a demonstration of how well the Sunderland could cope.
"I think it's a good barometer of economic resilience if we're still creating jobs in this type of economic climate," he said.
