Charity in appeal for more brain donors

The Sunderland branch of the Parkinson's Disease Society is encouraging more people to become brain donors.

Nationally, after an appeal in April, 2,332 people signed up to become donors, bringing the total to 4,032.

A Sunderland Parkinson's Disease Society spokesman said: "Research on brains from people both with and without Parkinson's is essential to help us move closer to our goal of finding a cure for the condition.

"We hope that more people will continue to register to donate their brains to the Brain Bank research. In particular, we need more men and younger people to register."

Celebrities including Jane Asher, Jeremy Paxman and John Stapleton have already pledged to donate their brain, but the charity now wants younger people with Parkinson's to sign up.

To sign up to the Parkinson's Brain Donor Register, tel. 0808 800 0303 or visit www.parkinsons.org.uk/brainbank.

The Sunderland branch meets on the second Monday of the month at 2pm in Chillingham House on Mulgrave Drive, opposite the National Glass Centre.
