Cast planting the seeds of a pantomime star

IT might only be May, but panto stars from Durham have already been getting in the festive spirit.

Cast members from the Gala Theatre's Cinderella spectacular launched a pumpkin-growing contest in honour of the fruit's appearance in the show.

They dropped into the Poplar Tree Garden Centre in Shincliffe Village to launch the contest for customers and panto-goers interested in growing their own.

Fence Houses-based actor Donald McBride will return for his third consecutive Gala panto outing and this year features as one half of an ugly sister double act, with his other half yet to be announced.

Joining Donald once again will be Seaham-born actor, Neil Armstrong, who has been in pantomime every year since 1987, and, like Donald, with the Gala for the last two years.

In the run up to Cinderella, Gala is encouraging its customers to "grow your own", and in conjunction with the Poplar Tree Garden Centre, is running a pumpkin-growing competition open to the general public.

Packets of pumpkin seeds are available for collection from Gala Box Office on a first-come first-served basis.

All entries must be returned to Gala the weekend of Saturday November 27, and Sunday, November 28, for inclusion.

Cinderella is at the Gala Theatre from December 1, 2010, until January 8. Show times and ticket prices vary, contact the Box Office on 332 4041 or visit www.galadurham.co.uk for further details.
