Brothers to face crash questions

Two brothers were due to be quizzed by police today after a high-speed crash involving a suspected stolen car.

The accident happened in Blind Lane, Silksworth, Sunderland, when a Jaguar XF left the road and hit an electricity pole.

The driver and passenger had to be cut free from the mangled vehicle by fire crews.

The driver had severe head and internal injuries while the passenger had a broken arm.

Both were taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital. They remained in hospital this morning but were expected to be quizzed by officers later today.

The car was left wedged between an electricity pole and the Donkin's pub.

Northumbria Police are investigating the incident. Officers are also investigating a burglary before the crash.

A force spokesman said: "Police received a report of a house burglary and the theft of a silver Jaguar XF from a property on Sunderland Road in Newbottle at 5.12am yesterday.

"Officers conducted a search of the area and at 5.53am a report was received that the car had crashed on Blind Lane in Silksworth.

"The ambulance and fire and rescue service attended the scene and two men were extracted from the car.

"Both men, aged 19 and 31, were taken by ambulance to Sunderland Royal Hospital where their injuries were described as non-life threatening."

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Northumbria Police on 03456 043 043 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
