Boy bitten by dog in unprovoked attack
Wendy Young with her seven year old son, Josh after he was bitten on the leg by a dog on his way to the shops.
SCHOOLBOY Josh Young was left crying in pain after he was attacked by a dog in the street.
The seven-year-old needed medical treatment when he was bitten on the leg by the terrier-type dog.
The animal, who was on a lead, was pulled away by the owner who then just walked off.
Josh had been making his way to shops in Barnwell, New Penshaw, with an older friend when he was bitten.
The New Penshaw Primary School pupil was taken to Grindon walk-in centre, Sunderland, for treatment and has been left shaken by the unprovoked attack.
Mum Wendy, 37, said: “He’s been totally shocked by it all. We have three dogs of our own and he can’t understand why a dog would attack him like this.”
The mum-of-three added: “I’ve always taught Josh to get off his bike when he crosses the road. He had done that and was just getting back on his bike when the dog bit his calf.
“The dog was on a lead and the owner just pulled him back and walked off. Josh was left crying on a cold, wet pavement. I can’t believe any owner would allow their dog to do that.”
Medical staff who treated Josh by dressing the wound and prescribing penicillin tablets say the bite markings and span are consistent with a terrier-type dog.
Mum-of-three Wendy, said: “He didn’t need any stitches, but we are concerned because the bite pierced the skin and you never know what germs are in a dog’s mouth.”
Wendy contacted police about the incident which happened at about 5pm on Sunday, December 12.
She said: “We’ve asked the community support officers to look out for the dog because we don’t want this happening to anyone else, but we don’t know who it belongs to.”
A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “Police received a report after a boy was bitten by a dog in Barnwell. Inquiries are ongoing.”
l A woman died after being attacked by a dog at a property in south London. The victim, in her 40s, suffered “multiple injuries” during the attack yesterday in Wallington.
