Award is just what the doctor ordered

A Wearside GP practice is in rude health after winning a prestigious award.

The Westbourne Medical Group, which won GP Practice of the Year at last year's Echo Best of Health awards, is the only family doctor practice in the North East to have received a Gold Award from Investors in People.

Dr Hubbard & Partners' practice has five GPs, nurse practitioners and a full team of staff working across three surgeries in Shiney Row, Fence Houses and Houghton.

It won the Investors in People award for its staff-focused approach.

Gloria Middleton, a non-clinical partner at Westbourne, said: "We are all very proud to have received this award.

"I think the way our staff, both clinical and non-clinical, work together as a team has been a key factor in achieving Gold status."

Investors in People carried out a two-day site visit where they spoke to 12 randomly selected staff about their experiences of working at the practice.

They found that there were good working relationships between staff, clear direction and supportive leadership.

They were also impressed with Westbourne's close involvement with the local patient group.

Joanne Forster, practice manager, said: "The good working environment has given staff a great morale and positive attitude which shines through when they are dealing with patients.

"The low staff turnaround also means that the patients become familiar with the staff and receive a more personalised service."
