Animal rights protestors campaign to get frogs legs off chip shop menu

A frog chorus of animal rights protesters croaked their disapproval about a Wearside chip shop's sale of the French delicacy.

Demonstrators from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) stood outside Katie Mac's Fish Bar at Pennywell shopping centre, to try to persuade the shop's owners to stop selling the unusual treat.

Four members of the group held up placards with slogans, while one of the protesters arrived dressed in a frog costume.

Peta claims that the majority of frogs' legs sold in the UK come from Indonesia, where they say villagers snatch the amphibians from swamps before cramming them into sacks and killing them in a cruel manner.

The group's special projects co-ordinator, Rose Glover, said: "The protest has gone really well.

"I think more and more people are starting to realise that it's a barbaric thing to do.

"The frogs are sliced open while they are still conscious and then their legs are hacked off.

"People don't realise the pain and suffering that goes on. Every animal deserves protection from abuse.

"If we did to dogs, cats and other animals what we did to frogs we would be arrested for animal cruelty. "

Despite the protest attracting much media coverage and a small gathering on onlookers, people were seen leaving Katie Mac's with frogs' legs meals.

Katie McMullan, owner of Katie Mac's, has already said that she will find out from her supplier exactly where the stock comes from.

She said: "I have sold frogs' legs for 21 years and when I first started it didn't get this kind of response.

"It has greatly surprised me, but I have actually sold more in this past five weeks than in the 21 years that I have had them on the menu.

"I don't force them on to anyone, because it's their choice."
