YOUNG gymnasts are hoping they will be able to hit new heights thanks to a cash donation from a community group.

Grindon Hall Christian School gym team has been handed £300 from Houghton Round Table.

The cash means that one of their members can now be put through a coaching qualification.

Once the person has passed their qualifications, it is hoped that she will then be able to put more youngsters through their paces, and alleviate the huge waiting list the gym club has.

There are 120 gymnasts on the books of the club with dozens more waiting to sign up.

Coach Jane Henderson, whose daughter Lauren, 20, will now be put through her coaching qualification, said: “Once Lauren is fully qualified it will mean she can start up her own gym class in the community, as we have the new sports hall at the school and new equipment.

“She’s been volunteering as a coach for the last three years, so she has the grounding for it.

“At the club the demand has outweighed the coaches we have got for so long.”

Grindon Hall had 20 national finalists compete in The British Schools Gymnastics Championships in Stoke-on-Trent, earlier this year, after successfully winning regional heats.

The school took home the under-14 sports acrobatics team trophy and their total medal count was nine gold, two silver and six bronze.

Explaning why the gymnastics team were handed the money, John Bloomfield, of Houghton Round Table, said: “The club contacted us via email saying they have a massive waiting list because they don’t have enough money for coaches.

“Hopefully, before the end of the summer, they’ll have someone else qualified.

“We’re always keen on helping these type of organisations which keep kids occupied and off the streets.”
