Wear among the best in the land at IT

SUNDERLAND is taking the lead when it comes to using digital technology to improve lives.

Now the city’s success in the area will be shared with the rest of the country, at a See IT in Action event tomorrow.

Sunderland Council will provide both the keynote speaker and the foreword in the delegates’ brochure, for the national Digital Inclusion event, at London’s Rich Mix conference centre.

Officers will demonstrate projects which earned Sunderland Beacon Status for Digital Inclusion in 2009.

Some are based on using existing technology, such as mobile phones, to improve independence for vulnerable people.

Others, such as kiosk technology for health checks in community venues, use new equipment developed to deliver more customer-focussed services.

Coun Dave Allan, who will speak at the event, said: “In Sunderland we have long recognised the importance that access to digital skills and technology has in our ability to deliver services in the most efficient manner, and in ensuring that our residents have the skills necessary to live and work in the 21st-century information age.”
