A CANCER survivor is hoping to repeat sell-out success at a charity event.
Donna Hannah raised £3,000 for cancer charities at her first annual fund-raiser in August, and this year the 39-year-old is aiming to smash that total.
Donna, of Oxclose, Washington, was diagnosed with a rare form of womb cancer last February and had a hysterectomy to remove her uterus, cervix, ovaries and some pelvic nodes, shattering her dreams of having children.
She said: “Knowing it was a year since the operation, looking back where that year has gone, and where I am now, it still feels like it was yesterday.
“I was a little bit upset thinking back over everything, but I am relieved.”
The civil servant is getting her life back on track and has returned to work.
She said: “I found it difficult going back to work because I had been off for eight months. Now I’m hoping to get back to the gym and get fitter.”
Donna is aiming to make the event, at the Stella Maris Catholic Club, Albany, Washington, on June 29, a huge success, in aid of Northern Cancer Care Research at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
“I had my operation there and I’m still attending three-month check-ups, and after a year I’ll have to go for six monthly check-ups.”
The theme for the event is summer beach, complete with inflatable palm trees, grass skirts and a bongo player.
Donna said: “We are going to have a children’s event during the day so there will be a limbo competition and a disco.”
“On the night I’ve got someone offering to do spray tans for the beach theme, and we’re hoping to have a Mr and Mrs beach competition.”
There will be raffles and collections to raise money, and on the same day, Donna’s friend Gary Steele, of Oxclose, will be cycling the coast-to-coast route to boost funds for the charity.
