FUND-RAISERS are being urged to sign up for the challenge of a lifetime in aid of a new centre for ex-servicemen and women.

Scores of people are expected to take part in the Warrior Beach Assault, a gruelling 10k obstacle course, to help raise money for a veterans’ centre being built at Elms West, in Sunderland.

Although the event is open to anyone hoping to raise funds for a host of charities, the main focus is on getting people to support the Adderstone Foundation and Norcare support project.

A target of £200,000 has been set to help complete the ambitious scheme, which aims to help military personnel leaving the services cope with a return to civilian life.

According to research, many veterans are having to cope with problems ranging from money issues to breakdowns in family relationships.

The beach assault is being organised by Newcastle-based Total Racing International (TRI), which specialises in putting together sporting challenge events.

“This is going to be an absolutely brilliant day out and it’s suitable for people at all fitness levels,” said Phil Gray, from TRI.

“We really hope people will get behind it and come and try something really different and help a great cause at the same time.”

Graham Hall, who set up the Sunderland Armed Forces Network to support those returning to civvy street, added: “We have 26,000 veterans in the city so this type of facility is very much needed.”

The Warrior Beach Assault, which includes challenges called Jacob’s Ladder, Kill Zone and Beach Burn, will take place at Whitley Bay promenade and beach on Saturday, March 29.

Entry for the event is £49 a person.
