A WAR veteran was invited to give the green light to a new championship golf course.

Bill Allchurch, 95, from Durham, was captured during Operation Market Garden – the airborne invasion of Holland in September 1944 – fighting at The Battle of Arnhem.

He was caught on the fifth day, when he was then interrogated and transported by truck to a Nazi Prisoner of War camp before he was later able to escape.

Golf fanatic Bill was honoured at his home club, Ramside Hall Hotel, in Durham, yesterday, when he was asked to strike the first shot on the £3million 18-hole Cathedral Course, while wife Joyce, 81, teed off to open the green for ladies.

The development is the first phase of a £15million expansion at Ramside, which will see a luxury spa, health club, gymnasium, swimming pool and 47 new hotel bedrooms open in spring.
