VOLUNTEERS have brought new life into Sunderland charity Headlight.
The group from The Prince’s Trust Team Programme, based at Farringdon Fire Station, picked up their brushes to give the headquarters a makeover.
With team leader Alan D’Arcy, 33, the eight volunteers, aged 16 to 25, worked for days to transform the Mary Street building from a hotchpotch of colours to more calming, neutral tones.
Alan said: “We’ve done the bathroom, kitchen, stairs and doors, and we are intending to do as much of the building as possible.”
The group offered its services to Headlight as part of the 12-week Team Programme, which requires members to do two weeks’ voluntary work.
Alan said: “We were bouncing ideas back and forth, and one of the girls suggested Headlight. When she told everyone a bit about the charity, we decided it was the right one for us to help, and Headlight were over the moon when we offered to decorate for them”
Alan said it was the first time the programme had been delivered at Farringdon Fire Station in five years.
“They were keen to run it now because we want to expand the provision of the programme, because of the good work that has been done in other stations,” he said.
Susie Turner, 23, a support worker at Headlight,” said “We are really grateful that the team chose us. We would never be able to afford to pay to get this sort of work done.”
