TRADITIONAL car games are going the journey in favour of tablet apps when it comes to entertaining children, according to a new survey.

Thousands of Wearsiders are setting off on road trips this week as families enjoy the Easter holidays, leaving parents trying to keep bored youngsters entertained in the cars and on public transport.

And new research conducted by Disney shows more parents are turning to technology over traditional travelling games.

The survey found eight out of 10 of parents in the region said tablets and smartphones can help to relieve car boredom, with only one in 10 saying they still used traditional games such as I Spy.

The report, conducted by Disney UK atthe launch of its new iOS app Disney Junior Play, polled 5,000 British parents with children under the age of 10 on their techniques to keep the family happy during journeys.

Disney said its apps aim encourage creativity, benefit logical thinking skills, and help with hand-eye coordination.

Parenting expert and broadcaster Liz Fraser said: “We often take our three children on long car journeys during the school holidays, so this news is something I can really relate to.

“There’s nothing quite like that sinking feeling when you first hear ‘are we nearly there?’ – often when you’ve only been on the road for ten minutes!

“Tablets and smartphones are fantastic tools to make the journey more bearable for everyone – and we can all talk about the games together, and interact while they’re playing and learning.”

In 2013 the number of smartphone users in the UK reached 72 per cent, growing by 14 per cent from the previous year.

In October 2013 the 60 billionth app was downloaded from Apple’s App Store. There are more than one million apps on the App Store.

Boel Ferguson vice president and general manager of Disney Interactive EMEA & UK, said: “Increasingly children’s’ first experience with Disney is now a digital one so we have made mobile an important canvas for our storytelling.

“The highly-engaging Disney Junior Play app brings Disney magic and some of Disney Junior’s most beloved characters to mobile devices that will entertain kids and parents alike.”
