PLAYERS past and present took to Twitter following the match to congratulate the Black Cats on their amazing win.

On loan striker Fabio Borini tweeted: “Tonight @SAFCofficial The fans, the players took a piece of my heart forever! Thank you everyone! I love football!! wembleyyyy”

Former midfielder David Meyler, now at Hull, said: “Delighted for the Sunderland lads. Well earned. Great day out to look forward too for the mackems!!”

Ex-Everton star Tim Cahill, wrote: “Congratulations to @SAFCofficial fans. Have had a rough ride over the years. #BigResult”

Current defender Carlos Cuellar said: “Yeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssss!!!! Lest go to Wembley!!!! Well done lads!!”

Former Black Cat Michael Gray poked fun at his famous 1998 play-off penalty miss, which saw Sunderland miss out on a place in the Premier League. He tweeted: “I was up next to take a pen hahahahaahahahaaaaaa #SAFC #wemberrrlllyyyy” while manager that day Peter Reid took to Twitter to write: “Congratulations SAFC.”

Sunderland legend Marco Gabbiadini said: “Amazing scenes at Old Trafford Proud to be an honorary Mackem.”
