Truck flips in crash

A DRIVER had to be rescued from his lorry after it turned on to its side on a busy route in rush hour.

Fire crews from Washington, Fulwell and Hebburn were called to the scene of the accident after the truck flipped on to its side in Cherry Blossom Way, Washington, on Monday, just after 5pm.

It happened when the HGV stuck bollards and the kerb.

The officers used a short ladder to climb into the cab and then lowered a second ladder inside, allowing the driver, who is aged in his 40s, to climb out.

He was checked by paramedics at the scene but did not need hospital treatment.
