Tribute to victims of Sunderland’s Victoria Hall disaster

Fr Andrew Collins Jones, from St Ignatius Church, Hendon, led the short annual service beside the memorial in Mowbray Park to the 183 children who perished in the Victoria Hall disaster in Sunderland on 16 June 1883. A number of pupils from Hendon Road Primary were present at the service and Ellie Innes, 11, was chosen to lay a small wreath in front of the memorial.

WEARSIDERS united to mark the anniversary of a historic tragedy where nearly 200 children lost their lives.

Sunderland families were haunted by the deaths of 183 children – most of whom were under 10 – who were killed in the Victoria Hall Disaster, on June 16, 1883.

They were crushed in a stampede for gifts after a show at the concert hall in Toward Road, which was later destroyed by a German bomb during the Second World War.
