Threat shuts A19

THE A19 was closed in both directions during rush hour today after a woman stood on the wrong side of railings on one of its footbridges.

Concerns were raised about the woman’s safety after she was spotted at 6.20am on the bridge, which leads from Ferryboat Lane in North Hylton to the Nissan site.

Police stopped traffic on both carriageways beneath the bridge and queues backed up past the A690 as traffic and beyond Testos roundabout at Boldon in addition to the roads leading on to the A19.

Diversions were put in place as police dealt with the incident.

The woman was escorted from the bridge at 8.20am and the road reopened soon after.
