A THIEF snatched handfuls of scrap metal and ran off.
Terence Bulmer filled a bag with metal shavings, which were in a container outside a Sunderland scrapyard.
However, after being spotted by a worker, the 30-year-old dumped the bag and fled the Jennings Foundry in Tatham Street, Hendon.
Police arrested him after he was spotted getting into a blue van.
He pleaded guilty to theft at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court.
Heather Bolton, defending, said Bulmer saw the scrap outside the foundry and thought it had been abandoned. She added: “He accepts that he took a handful of the chips and thought he would get some money for them.
“He did have some left in the car, he did take them, and he did take them to a scrap metal merchant and was told they were worthless.”
The court heard that Bulmer, of Hendon Close, had a previous conviction for violent disorder and also owed £160 in fines for a traffic offence.
Magistrates imposed a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered he pay a £15 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.
