Thief made off with Foster’s pack from Sunderland store

A THIEF stole lager from a store – despite knowing that the shop assistant recognised him.

Daine Bainbridge ran off with four cans of Foster’s, worth £5, from Premier Stores in Courtney Drive, Silksworth, Sunderland.

The 25-year-old pleaded guilty to theft when he appeared at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court.

He also admitted having a Class B drug, after officers found cannabis on him.

John McGlone, prosecuting, said: “The shop assitant, who knows him, saw him enter the store. He walked over to the alcohol section, chose four cans of Fosters, placed them on the counter and asked if he could make payment.

“She moved to the till, he picked up the cans and ran out.”

The court heard Bainbridge, from Plains Farm in Sunderland, also stole a £12 case of lager from a Premier Stores shop in February.

Gerry Armstrong, defending, said the cannabis that Bainbridge had was so small that officers did not even know how much it weighed. Regarding the theft, he said: “He was going to pay with his card, then walked out.”

Bainbridge was released on bail until a hearing on June 24.
