A VIBRANT new event is on its way to the streets of Wearside.

The Color Run will be hosted by the city this summer, with Sunderland chosen to become the first place in the region to stage one of the 5k routes on Saturday, July 20.

The celebrations are a new genre of running and have already taken the US by storm.

Around 6,000 entrants are expected to take part in the event, where they will be doused from head to toe in bright pigments made from cornstarch, hurled by bystanders at each kilometre marker along the route.

The two rules of the race are to wear white on the starting line and be covered in paint by the finish.

As the races comes to close, runners are invited to join the Finish Festival, where the crowd will throw colour every 15 minutes to welcome new runners coming in.

The event, which is being organised by Sunderland Live, is said to be family friendly and untimed, with the runs billed as The Happiest 5K on the Planet and held to promote health and wellbeing.

Sunderland’s will stand alongside London, Manchester, Birmingham, Belfast and Brighton, which have also been picked to hold Color Runs. Chris Alexander, chief operating officer of Sunderland Live said: “We are delighted to be bringing The Color Run to the North East for the first time on July 20 and we’re expecting demand for places to be very high.

“Further information will be announced in January.”

The Color Run made its international debut in January last year and those behind the phenomenon say more than 100 of the events were held worldwide this year, bringing together more than a million participants.

Past races, which have included those held this year in London, Brighton, Belfast and Manchester this year, have helped fund-raisers boost their appeals, and sparked wedding proposals and also hosted a marriage
ceremony.

Entries for Sunderland’s race can be submitted from Friday, January 31.

The Color Run will follow on from the Wearmouth Bridge Zip Wire Challenge, which will take place on the weekend of May 3 and 4.
