Sunderland students strip off for sports funding

STUDENTS have taken their kit off for a good cause.

Members of Sunderland University’s sports clubs posed – with carefully-positioned props – for a series of revealing snaps which feature in two calendars.

Cash raised from the lads and lasses calendars will help Sunderland Sports Fund – a trust which provides financial aid for the city’s talented young or disabled sports people of all ages.

University sports and activities officer Danielle Farrell said: “I thought of the idea when we were trying to come up with fun ways the university sports teams could get involved with raising money for charities.

“I’d heard of other universities doing it, and we’ve all seen Calendar Girls, so it seemed like the obvious fun thing to do.

“We wanted the money to go to a local sports charity, and I had heard of the Sunderland Sports Fund through the men’s rugby team.

“It’s a charity which help young people achieve their dreams and without their support these kids wouldn’t have the opportunity.“

More than 20 clubs – including football, netball, equestrian and taekwondo took part – using everything from sporting equipment to fruit to protect their modesty.

“The immediate response I received from clubs was very promising, especially as they knew it was in aid of charity,” added Danielle.

“I decided two separate calendars would give more people the chance to participate, and it eliminated any ideas of mixed photos.

“I think by doing it, it seemed to give some people more confidence within themselves.”

The calendar is available to buy from the CitySpace reception, Chester Road, at £8 for one, £15 for two and £20 for three.
