BLACK Cats striker Jozy Altidore has thrown his support behind a campaign to “stamp out” racism in football after being targeted by yobs.

The 24-year-old has become the latest Sunderland AFC player to back Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC), becoming an ambassador for the educational charity.

The USA international, who also sits on FIFA’s international anti-racism task force, becomes SAFC’s 2014 ambassador for the organisation, which works with more than 50,000 people throughout the UK each year.

“I’m delighted to be lending my support to an incredibly important organisation like SRtRC and to be promoting the vital work they do within our community,” said Jozy.

Last year, while playing for Dutch club AZ Alkmaar, the player had “monkey chants” directed at him during his former side’s 5-0 victory at Den Bosch.

Following the KNVB Cup match, he said he would pray for the fans who abused him in the “hope they become better people”.
