Sunderland street dancers win national recognition

DANCERS have a spring in their step after attending a prestigious national workshop.

A talented troupe of dancers aged 11-17 from Dance Jam, in Sunniside, won a place at the U Dance event hosted by Youth Dance England.

They were invited to represent the North East at the workshop after impressing at regional events.

They presented their own style of street dance at the workshops in Nottingham and also learnt about other disciplines, such as ballet.

Mark Johnson, from Dance Jam, said: “They were one of only two groups from the whole of the North East invited to take part in U Dance, which was a weekend of workshops with professional dancers and choreographers.

“They had to go through three stages to even be invited to the event. People like Richard Alston were there, who is a celebrated choreographer.

“It was a great opportunity.”
